Windows 7 firewall service won’t start
Problem
When you attempt to start the Windows 7 firewall service you receive the following error
Windows could not start the Windows Firewall on Local Computer. For more information, review the system event log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 5.
If you look in the System Event Log, you will see event 7024 from the Service Control Manager
The Windows Firewall service terminated with service-specific error Access is denied..
Cause
This may be caused because the “NT Service\MpsSvc” account does not have adequate permissions on the following registry key
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess
Solution
- In Registry Editor, browse to the key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess
- Right click SharedAccess, and click Permissions.
- Click Add.
- In the “Enter the object names to select” field, type “NT SERVICE\mpssvc”. Then click Check Names. The name should change to MpsSvc
- Click OK.
- Select Full Control in the Allow column.
- Click OK.

Just wanted to say thanks.
After getting a Trojan hat successfully eliminated my reg entries and disabling services entries, I was in a pickle.
I was able to download the BFE reg file and MPSSVC reg file and import them, but still had the error 5 issues.
I spent hours trying to find out how to renable them, even the Microsoft FixIt program for Windows Firewall couldn’t do it, kept saying the the problem (virus or whatever) still existed, even after I made sure it was gone.
This got my firewall up and running in just a few short seconds.

Virus had hosed daughter’s system 10 days ago.
Got most things running again (Win Update, etc).
Could NOT get firewall running … until NOW.
I did stuff with keys BELOW that one, but not the main key.

Unfortunately did not work for me. I’m getting prompted with “Unable to save permission changes on SharedAccess. Access is denied.”
